IMD Forecasts Cooler Week Ahead As Delhi Braces For Early Winter Chill

A gentle chill has arrived across Delhi and the National Capital Region this week as temperatures begin their seasonal slide.

Residents are feeling the familiar nip in the air, signalling the gradual approach of winter.

Both day and night temperatures have dropped noticeably, with mild sunshine during the day and cooler mornings and evenings.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), minimum temperatures are likely to fall to around 14°C in the coming days, while maximum temperatures will hover near 27°C.

From November 5 to 10, forecasters expect a steady decline in both maximum and minimum readings, confirming a clear shift towards colder weather.

Brisk Winds Improve Air Quality

Since Sunday night, strong winds have swept through Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, helping disperse pollutants that had kept the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the ‘very poor’ range.

By Monday morning, the AQI improved to the ‘poor’ or orange zone, bringing some relief to residents who had been struggling with dense smog and reduced visibility.

Meteorologists say that if current wind patterns persist, pollution levels could ease further over the next few days.

However, they caution that these same winds will intensify the chill, particularly at night and early morning. Commuters have been advised to dress warmly and prepare for colder starts to the day.

IMD Forecast: Normal Winter Ahead

IMD scientists have noted that the noticeable drop in minimum temperatures is making the cold more apparent, even though daytime highs remain moderate. They also reassured residents that northwest India, including Delhi-NCR, is not likely to face an unusually harsh winter this month.

Instead, conditions are projected to remain largely normal, similar to the trends seen in recent years.

This clarification follows speculation about an exceptionally cold November linked to possible La Niña developments, which can sometimes intensify winter conditions in northern India.

Daytime temperatures will remain normal or slightly below normal, while night temperatures could stay above normal in most parts of the country — except for certain areas of northwest India, such as Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan, where chillier nights are likely.

As winter edges closer, Delhi-NCR can expect clearer skies, cleaner air, and crisper mornings.

The combination of brisk winds and mild sunshine is likely to bring a welcome respite from pollution, even as residents reach for their warm clothes a little earlier than usual this year.
