Government Puts Airline Seat Pricing Rule On Hold; 60% Free Seat Mandate Deferred

The government has put on hold its directive requiring airlines to offer at least 60 per cent of seats without additional charges. The rule was scheduled to take effect on April 20.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation conveyed its decision to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation after reviewing concerns raised by industry stakeholders.

Representations from the Federation of Indian Airlines and Akasa Air highlighted operational challenges and potential disruptions to fare structures.

The Ministry stated that the proposal required further examination, particularly regarding its compatibility with India’s deregulated tariff framework.

Until a comprehensive review concludes, the provision will remain in abeyance.

Currently, airlines offer around 20 per cent of seats at no charge. The remaining seats attract selection fees, typically ranging between ₹200 and ₹2,100.

Pricing varies based on seat location, including front-row preference and additional legroom.

The original directive, issued on March 18, aimed to address rising passenger grievances over ancillary charges such as seat selection. It also instructed airlines to seat passengers booked under the same PNR together, preferably in adjacent seats, to improve convenience.

The suspension comes at a time when India’s aviation sector continues to expand rapidly.

The country now ranks among the world’s largest domestic aviation markets, with airports handling over five lakh passengers daily.

Despite the rollback, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to enhancing passenger experience, ensuring transparency, and maintaining stringent safety standards across the aviation ecosystem.
