Delhi-NCR Weather: Heavy Rain Triggers Traffic Disruptions, Red Alert Issued

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Monday, disrupting traffic and slowing vehicular movement across the national capital.

Intense showers affected parts of South Delhi and adjoining areas as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several districts.

The IMD warned that isolated areas across South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi could receive heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph.

The weather agency forecast moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning at several places across Central Delhi, South Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi.

The heavy downpour affected traffic movement in multiple parts of the capital, while continued rainfall raised concerns over waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Authorities advised residents to remain cautious, particularly during thunderstorms, and avoid open spaces because of the risk of lightning strikes.

The IMD issued weather warnings for several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat, Maharashtra and parts of the Northeast.

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar faced particularly severe weather warnings, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected across several districts.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall was forecast in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the poor category. Monitoring stations recorded high AQI levels, with Dwarka-Sector 8 recording 174 and Anand Vihar recording 263, among the higher readings reported across the city.
