India and Bhutan have announced a significant initiative to introduce cross-border remittance services by integrating the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the postal framework. The system will operate by linking the Universal Postal Union’s PosTransfer platform with India’s digital payments infrastructure.
This development aims to deliver swift, economical, and accessible money transfer services between the two nations.
Officials stated that the initiative would strengthen financial connectivity and broaden digital inclusion for citizens.
The agreement follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding on postal cooperation between India Post and Bhutan Post.
The framework outlines collaboration across postal operations, logistics, technology advancement, and knowledge sharing.
Both nations underscored the importance of capacity building and professional training.
Bhutanese officials will participate in specialised programmes in India at institutions such as the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy.
These sessions will focus on operational efficiency, management practices, and emerging technologies.
The partnership will also enhance technological cooperation, including the adoption of digital postal systems and innovations like the Digital Address Code.
These tools are expected to improve accuracy in addressing, logistics planning, and service delivery efficiency.
Additionally, both sides agreed to deepen engagement in philately and cultural exchange, with Bhutan invited to participate in exhibitions in India.
India also offered to share expertise in postal financial services to support savings mobilisation and expand financial inclusion through postal networks.
