Indian Pharma Firms Introduce Generic Semaglutide Injections For Diabetes & Obesity Treatment

Several leading Indian pharmaceutical companies, including Sun Pharma, Zydus Lifesciences, and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, have introduced generic versions of semaglutide injections following the expiry of its patent. The move aims to make treatment for Type 2 Diabetes and obesity more affordable.

This development follows the earlier launch by Natco Pharma, which priced its generic semaglutide at Rs 1,290 per month. Sun Pharma unveiled its variants under the brands Noveltreat and Sematrinity.

Noveltreat targets chronic weight management with five dosage strengths, while Sematrinity addresses inadequately controlled diabetes with two strengths.

Weekly therapy costs range between Rs 900 and Rs 2,000 for Noveltreat and Rs 750 to Rs 1,300 for Sematrinity.

Zydus Lifesciences introduced its product via a reusable multi-dose pen, marketed as SEMAGLYN, MASHEMA, and ALTERME.

These cater to both diabetes and obesity, with an estimated monthly cost of Rs 2,200.

Meanwhile, Dr Reddy’s launched Obeda, described as India’s first DCGI-approved generic semaglutide. It is available in 2 mg and 4 mg pre-filled pens, priced at Rs 4,200 monthly.

Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, has demonstrated efficacy in improving glycaemic control and aiding weight reduction.

India’s pharmaceutical sector continues to expand, with exports rising 9.4 per cent to $30.47 billion in 2024-25.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry projects the industry to reach $130 billion by 2030, reinforcing its global leadership.
