Instagram has reportedly carried out a large-scale removal of bots and inactive accounts, leading to a sudden decline in follower numbers for several celebrities, influencers and brands on the platform.
According to reports circulating online, many high-profile accounts were affected during the cleanup exercise.
Influencer and entrepreneur Kylie Jenner was reportedly among the biggest names impacted, with reports claiming her account lost more than 14 million followers.
Several other public figures and content creators also experienced sharp overnight drops in followers and engagement figures.
The reported action is believed to be part of Meta’s routine effort to reduce fake activity on the platform.
Bot accounts are commonly used to artificially boost followers, likes, comments and engagement metrics on social media platforms.
Responding to the reports, a spokesperson for Meta said the company regularly removes inactive profiles as part of standard platform maintenance.
The spokesperson clarified that the process did not affect active and genuine users. The spokesperson added that follower counts would again reflect suspended accounts restored after verification.
The large-scale removal quickly became a trending topic online. Social media users referred to it as the ‘Great Purge of 2026’.
Many users shared screenshots showing significant reductions in follower counts across multiple accounts.
One post on X claimed that even Instagram’s official account had lost nearly 9 million followers during the cleanup drive. The user joked that ‘nobody was safe’ from the purge.
