Elon Musk Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman; Here’s Why

Tesla CEO Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, alleging that the company abandoned the original plan to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) for humanity’s benefit rather than profit. Musk’s legal action, as reported by Reuters, claimed that Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman approached Musk to transform the company into an open-source, non-profit entity.

Musk’s lawyers argued that OpenAI’s profit-centric focus violated their contractual obligations. The lawsuit also contended that OpenAI maintained the design of GPT4 as a ‘complete secret.’ Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, had stepped down from his board position in 2018. Within six months of its November 2022 launch, the ChatGPT developed by OpenAI became the fastest-growing software application globally.

On November 18, OpenAI dismissed Altman, citing a lack of confidence in his leadership. The Microsoft-backed company’s board stated that Altman’s departure followed a thorough review, revealing inconsistent communication hindering the board’s responsibilities. However, the ousting was short-lived, as Altman was rehired on November 23. In an interview with The Verge, Altman expressed feeling ‘hurt and angry’ but chose to accept the position again, emphasizing his deep commitment to OpenAI’s mission of achieving safe and beneficial Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Despite the legal dispute and internal challenges, Altman underscored the progress made toward the mission he passionately cared about, highlighting the substantial contributions and time he dedicated to the company over the years.
