Apple plans to tighten Full Disk Access controls on Mac computers after concerns emerged over AI agent apps accessing users’ private data.
The tech giant will introduce clearer permission prompts, requiring users to take deliberate action before granting applications broad access to their systems.
The move follows reports that some AI-powered agentic apps can access local data, including messages and files, after users grant Full Disk Access.
Apple originally designed Full Disk Access for backup tools and system utilities that need extensive access to Mac data. However, the company said some developers now use the permission in ways that could expose sensitive information without users fully understanding the risks.
Full Disk Access can bypass several privacy controls in macOS because backup applications require deeper system access. Apple warned that granting the permission to third-party apps could expose personal information and affect the privacy of people users communicate with.
The company also highlighted growing risks as AI agents become more capable and autonomous. Apple said these risks could increase as AI systems gain the ability to perform complex tasks on users’ behalf.
Under the planned changes, Mac users will receive more explicit prompts before granting third-party applications access to specific parts of their systems. Apple said the changes will help users understand what information an app can access and make more informed privacy decisions.
The issue gained attention following concerns surrounding AI agents such as Meta’s Muse. The app has reportedly crossed 5 million downloads, while some users raised concerns about its ability to perform tasks such as cancelling unused subscriptions while potentially accessing private information.
Apple continues to expand its presence in India, where UPI accounts for more than 80 per cent of digital payment transactions by volume.
