Zimbabwe Cruise Past Oman By Eight Wickets In T20 World Cup Opener

Zimbabwe began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in impressive fashion. They defeated Oman by eight wickets in the eighth match of the tournament. The game was played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on Monday.

The African side chased down a modest target of 103 with plenty of overs to spare, finishing the game in just 13.3 overs.

The Zimbabwe openers set the tone early, playing with freedom and intent as they scored briskly during the powerplay. Their fluent stroke play ensured the run rate stayed above ten runs per over in the opening three overs, putting immediate pressure on the Omani attack.

Oman briefly halted the momentum in the fourth over. Sufyan Mehmood dismissed Tadiwanashe Marumani, who had scored 21 runs from 11 balls with five boundaries.

Mehmood then struck again in the same over, removing Dion Myers without a run to his name.

After losing two quick wickets, Brendan Taylor joined Brian Bennett at the crease and the pair adopted a measured approach. They focused on rotating the strike and avoided unnecessary risks, slowly tightening Zimbabwe’s grip on the contest.

Bennett remained unbeaten on 48, narrowly missing a half-century after hitting seven fours. Taylor added stability with 31 off 30 balls, including three boundaries, before retiring hurt late in the innings. Captain Sikandar Raza completed the chase with the decisive runs.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers had earlier dictated terms after choosing to field. Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava and Brad Evans shared nine wickets between them, dismantling Oman’s batting line-up and bowling them out for 103 in 19.5 overs.

Oman lost captain Jatinder Singh early, followed quickly by Hammad Mirza, as pressure mounted. Muzarabani then struck twice in one over to remove Aamir Kaleem and Karan Sonavale, leaving Oman in deep trouble.

A brief recovery came through Vinayak Shukla and Sufyan Mehmood, who combined for a 42-run stand, the highest partnership of the innings.

Despite their efforts, Oman could only reach a modest total, which Zimbabwe chased down comfortably to secure a commanding opening victory.
