“Why would I…” The captain of Sri Lanka responded absurdly when told about Kohli’s unprecedented 49th century

The most certain answer was revealed on Sunday evening, capping up the along-awaited suspenseful event in International cricket. On his 35th birthday, Kohli tied Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI hundreds as India defeated South Africa by a commanding 243 runs in Kolkata.

Well-wishes flooded in from all across the world to congratulate the legend of the modern period on his incredible World Cup 2023 performance. When told about Kohli’s record, Kusal Mendis was therefore expected to react similarly, but the Sri Lankan captain had an absurd response.

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Monday, Sri Lanka takes on Bangladesh in a match that could potentially send them to the semifinals. During the pre-game news conference on Sunday, Mendis was informed of Kohli’s historic achievement in Kolkata and asked if he would like to congratulate him.

However, what came next was an unexpected reply that quickly gained widespread attention on Social media.
Reporter: Virat Kohli has just scored his 49th ODI ton. Would you like to congratulate him? Kusal Mendis: Why would I congratulate him?

Following Rohit Sharma’s explosive opening performance of forty runs in 24 balls on a challenging Kolkata track, South Africa recovered to take two wickets in only 28 balls as India lost both of their openers.

Subsequently, Kohli and Shreyas Iyer joined forces for a third-wicket stand of 134 runs, during which the former captain of India reached his second World Cup century and his 49th ODI century. Meanwhile, Iyer slammed 77 from 87 in his second fifty-over match as the hosts set a target of 327 runs.

After Mohammed Siraj opened the floodgates in the second over and claimed five wickets as India defeated South Africa for just 83 runs in 27.1 overs, Ravindra Jadeja responded by tearing through the middle order.

With one game remaining before they go to the semifinals, India’s unbeaten league record is up to eight out of eight thanks to the victory. The Netherlands will be India’s next opponent on November 12 in Bengaluru.
