Congress leader: “Centre’s double standards” regarding the Mahua Moitra and Ramesh Bidhuri incidents

New Delhi: Veteran Congressman Mani Shankar Aiyar has charged that the BJP-led central government is applying “double standards” in responding to claims that BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri and Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra have broken parliamentary rules. Even though Moitra is being charged with cash-for-query, Bidhuri made offensive comments about BSP MP Danish Ali back in September.

The former Union minister claimed on Sunday that the two incidents were being handled by the current government using different standards, putting democracy in jeopardy.

“We need to safeguard the Indian Constitution’s spirit. All three of our democratic pillars—the legislative, executive, and judicial branches—must continue to be robust. They make up the spirit as well as the form of parliamentary democracy. But it’s not taking place. He questioned at an occasion, “Why is the current Central government treating TMC’s Mahua Moitra and BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri differently or with double standards?

After being accused of giving businessman Darshan Hiranandani her official account login details in exchange for costly gifts and other inducements, Moitra appeared before the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee. BJP leader Nishikant Dubey has accused the businessman of exploiting Moitra’s account to publish his own questions to Parliament regarding the Adani Group, claiming “evidence” provided by her erstwhile friend Jai Anant Dehadrai.

On November 2, Moitra went before the panel; she subsequently stormed out, claiming that Vinod Sonkar, the panel’s chairperson, had asked her questions that were unethical. Sonkar, however, said she spoke to him in an unparliamentary manner. She had denied any misconduct at the panel meeting.

The South Delhi-based BJP MP Bidhuri had come under heavy fire for his “derogatory” remarks made on Ali in the Lok Sabha.

According to Aiyar, Moitra was compelled to appeal to the panel while Bidhuri was on the campaign trail for the BJP.

“I must say that electorates will have to remain cautious and alert in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls… they must cast their votes in the 2024 polls after proper thought,” said reporter.

Moitra has requested that the panel call her back after November 5. But the panel ordered her to show up on November 2.
