Watch: Rohit takes the first ODI wicket in 11 years after Kohli, and he joins Ganguly and Kapil Dev in the elite WC list

The only other batter to accomplish this feat in World Cup history was Rohit Sharma, who did so for the second time in a row. In India’s final league match of the home tournament against Netherlands on Sunday, Rohit broke the 500-run barrier after a brilliant 2019 that saw five hundreds in a row and 648 runs. At the conclusion of India’s 160-run victory at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, though, the main talking point was the captain’s influence with the ball as he claimed an ODI wicket for the first time in 11 years.

Rohit made his attacking debut in this World Cup shortly after Virat Kohli claimed his first international wicket in nine years by dismissing Scott Edwards, the captain of the Netherlands. In actuality, it was the first time Rohit had rolled his arms in an international cricket match in about three years, having last done so in the February 2021 Test match against England in Chennai.

When Rohit entered the attack in the 48th over with the Netherlands nine down, Teja Nidamanuru struck him for a six off a flat delivery in the fourth ball. However, the captain came back the very next ball. He added extra fly to the delivery, and Nidamanuru attempted to reach the maximum once more, but Mohammed Shami’s easy catch at long-on ended the innings.

In 11 years, Rohit had not taken a wicket in an ODI; his last wicket came in a 2012 match against Australia in Melbourne. As a result, he now has nine wickets in the format and twelve in international cricket.

After being dismissed, Rohit became the first captain of India to take a wicket in a World Cup game in 20 years. Sourav Ganguly, who took three wickets in just five overs in a match against Zimbabwe in the 2003 tournament, was the last Indian captain. The only other captain to accomplish this was the illustrious Kapil Dev, who claimed 17 wickets throughout the 1983 and 1987 World Cups.
