Unfavourable weather conditions interrupted the scheduled start of the IPL 2026 match between RCB and KKR at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium, preventing the toss from taking place on time.
Rain showers around 4:30 PM forced ground staff to shield the entire playing area with covers for nearly 30 minutes. Although the weather showed brief signs of improvement, a drizzle returned at around 6:15 PM, prompting officials to remain cautious.
The pitch was uncovered temporarily, but worsening conditions soon required the covers to be reinstated.
A heavier spell of rain struck at approximately 6:35 PM, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Even though rainfall eased shortly before the scheduled toss, safety concerns and a wet outfield prevented any immediate progress.
On-field umpires Rohan Pandit and Nitin Menon, along with fourth umpire Kaushik Gandhi, assessed the ground conditions. At the same time, ground staff worked to clear accumulated water using super soppers.
Frequent lightning in the area raised further concerns, with a pitch inspection scheduled for later in the evening.
The surface in Raipur has tended to assist bowlers, making stroke play difficult for batters.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru approached the contest with momentum after securing a thrilling last-ball win against the Mumbai Indians at the same ground.
A win in this match could lift RCB to the top of the standings. In contrast, Kolkata Knight Riders, currently enjoying a four-match unbeaten run, must secure victory to stay in playoff contention.
If the match does not proceed, both teams will share points. This outcome would take RCB to 15 points from 12 matches, helping them retain a place among the top four.
A washout would dent KKR’s campaign, leaving them with 10 points from 11 matches. They would then need to win their remaining games at Eden Gardens to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, with the possibility of a delayed or shortened match depending on improvements in weather conditions.
