Moeen Ali: Virat Kohli’s Retirement Big Blow To Test Cricket; It’s Boost For England

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has called Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket a ‘massive blow’ to the format, crediting the Indian great with reinvigorating interest in red-ball cricket.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Moeen praised Kohli as a ‘pioneer’ who inspired fans and players alike, while also acknowledging that his absence, alongside Rohit Sharma, offers England a key advantage ahead of their five-Test home series against India starting June 20.

Kohli’s Absence: A Setback For Test Cricket Globally

Moeen said Kohli brought unparalleled passion to Test cricket.

“Virat was the one guy who always pushed the format forward,” he said. “After Sachin Tendulkar, he was the cricketer who filled stadiums. His intensity, charisma, and leadership made him a player fans loved watching.”

He further noted Kohli’s competitive spirit and achievements as a captain and batter, describing him as a ‘brilliant captain’ with an ‘amazing record’.

The absence of Kohli and Rohit, both of whom retired earlier this week, leaves India with a leadership vacuum and a less experienced squad. Moeen believes this tilts the scales in England’s favour.

“It’s a massive boost for England,” he said. “These are two senior players who know English conditions well. Rohit played brilliantly here last time. Their leadership and character will be missed by India.”

Gill Or Bumrah? Moeen Backs Shubman Gill For Captaincy

With India now looking for new leadership, Moeen believes Shubman Gill is the most likely candidate despite never having led the national team in Tests or ODIs.

“I think it will be Shubman Gill. Bumrah would be ideal, but his injury record is a concern,” Moeen noted. “Gill has a good cricketing brain and captains in the IPL, so he might be ready for the challenge, though England is a tough place for a first-time leader.”

Series Outlook: England Favourites, But India Can Surprise

Moeen said England, led by Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, start the series as favourites due to their depth and familiarity with home conditions.

However, he cautioned against underestimating India.

“They still have brilliant batters, just not the experience of playing in England. That matters a lot,” Moeen added.
