Jasmine Scripts Golden History At World Boxing Championships

India’s Jasmine Lamboria delivered the fight of her life to claim gold in the 57kg category at the World Boxing Championships. She stunned Olympic silver medallist Paris Szeremeta of Poland with a convincing 4-1 victory in the final.

Jasmine secured her first-ever World Championship medal, which also marked India’s first gold of this edition.

The bout began cautiously, with both fighters assessing each other. However, Jasmine ramped up the pressure in the following rounds, landing precise punches and taking control of the fight.

Her unrelenting aggression left the top seed unable to respond. Overjoyed, Jasmine said, “This is my first World medal, and it’s gold.”

She added, “Winning my maiden Worlds medal and having it be gold feels surreal. I just wanted to make India proud. I’m incredibly thankful to my coaches, the federation, and the entire support staff. This victory belongs to them.”

Jasmine has maintained strong form throughout the season, previously winning gold at the World Boxing Cup in Astana. She also holds a bronze from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and another bronze from the 2021 Asian Championships.

India’s medal tally expanded as Nupur secured silver in the 80kg final after falling to Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska.

Jasmine had earlier defeated Venezuela’s Omailyn Carolina Alcala 5-0 in the semifinals, while Nupur outclassed Turkey’s Seyma Duztas.

Pooja Rani also earned a medal in the same category, exiting after a tough semifinal against England’s Emily Asquith.

In the 50kg division, India’s Minakshi impressed with a 5-0 victory over Mongolia’s Altantsetseg Lutsaikhan. She will face Kazakhstan’s top seed, Nazym Kyzaibay, in the final on Sunday.

India has sent a 20-member squad to the inaugural event organised by the newly formed World Boxing body.

With several boxers still competing, the nation aims for a strong finish in both men’s and women’s categories.
