Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his visit to Assam as a moment of ‘a different kind of spiritual joy’, which coincided with Janmashtami celebrations in the state.
Addressing a large public gathering in Darrang district, PM Modi highlighted the significance of the occasion while unveiling several major health and infrastructure projects worth over Rs 6,300 crore.
The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for key healthcare institutions, including the Darrang Medical College and Hospital, a nursing college, and a GNM school, with a total investment of Rs 570 crore.
These initiatives aim to enhance medical education and healthcare access in the region.
PM Modi also inaugurated the 2.9-km Narengi-Kuruwa bridge over the Brahmaputra River, a crucial link designed to improve regional connectivity.
This Rs 1,200 crore bridge will ease transportation and boost economic activity.
The government also launched the ambitious 118.5-km Guwahati Ring Road project, connecting Kamrup and Darrang districts in Assam with Ri Bhoi district in Meghalaya.
Valued at Rs 4,530 crore, the project aims to significantly reduce urban congestion and boost inter-state connectivity.
PM Modi lauded the BJP-led ‘double-engine’ government in Assam, spearheaded by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, for driving rapid economic progress.
He noted that Assam’s impressive 13 per cent growth rate stands out as a key contributor to India’s position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
In a pointed message to political opponents, PM Modi recalled criticism faced by his government when it honoured cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika with the Bharat Ratna.
Defiantly, he affirmed his resolve as a devotee of Lord Shiva, saying, “I can absorb all the poison,” but will not stay silent when others are insulted.
He asked the audience whether his decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on ‘Bhupen Da’ was right, inviting applause.
Later in the day, PM Modi will inaugurate a bamboo-based ethanol plant in Golaghat district, valued at over Rs 5,000 crore.
He will also launch the Rs 7,230-crore Petro Fluidised Catalytic Cracker Unit at Numaligarh Refinery, signalling a significant boost to Assam’s clean energy and petrochemical sectors.
PM Modi’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to accelerating Assam’s development through healthcare, infrastructure, and sustainable energy projects.
These efforts foster economic growth, enhance connectivity, and honour the region’s cultural heritage — all while coinciding with a spiritually significant occasion for the people of Assam.
