IPL 2026: RCB Opt To Bowl Against Mumbai Indians In Crucial Clash

Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the toss and chose to field first against the Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2026 clash at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Sunday. The stadium continues to host RCB’s home fixtures for the remaining phase of the tournament.

Questions had emerged over Suryakumar Yadav’s participation after he travelled home for the birth of his daughter. Despite the uncertainty, he remained available and continued leading the Mumbai Indians while regular skipper Hardik Pandya recovered from a back-related issue.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru came into the match after suffering consecutive defeats against the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. Those losses dropped the team to fourth place, increasing competition for the playoff spots.

Phil Salt’s return strengthened Bengaluru’s batting department, though concerns persisted over the side’s bowling attack following Josh Hazlewood’s recent performances.

Rain interruptions before the match also limited preparation time for both teams.

Mumbai Indians entered the fixture under pressure after slipping to ninth position in the standings. The five-time champions needed positive results in their remaining matches to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The side continued to depend heavily on the opening partnership of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, especially as the middle order struggled to maintain consistency during the season.

Mumbai Indians have historically dominated the rivalry, registering 19 wins in 35 matches against Bengaluru. RCB have, however, produced stronger performances in several recent encounters.

After the toss, RCB captain Rajat Patidar said, “We will bowl first. Pretty obvious, the surface is good and pretty hard. But we will try to get them as early as possible and go on the chase.”

Discussing the team’s approach, he added, “We are going with the same team. Yes, we had a couple of losses, but it’s important to be in the present and play on your strengths.”

Mumbai Indians stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav stated, “We are pretty confident to bat first. Big ground, black soil wicket, and runs on the board will always put pressure on the other team.”

Yadav also confirmed that the Mumbai Indians had retained the same combination for the match in Raipur.
