In an unexpected turn of events at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, Punjab Kings found themselves entangled in a major blunder as they inadvertently bought the ‘wrong player.’ The franchise, led by owners Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta, realized the mistake only after the bid had been successfully completed, leaving them unable to reverse the transaction.
The player at the centre of this chaos is the uncapped Indian talent, Shashank Singh, who, despite being acquired by Punjab Kings, is now faced with the irony of being unwanted by the team that secured him.
Franchise teams participating in the auction meticulously prepare by analyzing player rosters and identifying their target acquisitions. However, Punjab Kings seemed to have faltered in their strategy, mistaking Chattisgarh player Shashank Singh for someone else.
The unprecedented scenes unfolded as Preity Zinta raised the paddle for Shashank Singh during the accelerated phase of the auction, dedicated to uncapped Indian players with a base price of INR 20 lakh. The player was quickly sold, with no other franchises bidding for him.
The realisation of the mistake struck Punjab Kings when the auctioneer, Mallika Sagar, moved on to the next set of players, and Tanay Thyagrajan’s name came up. It was then that the team discovered their blunder, realizing they had misunderstood Shashank Singh for a different player.
Despite attempting to rectify the error, Mallika Sagar stood firm, asserting that the auction process had concluded for Shashank Singh as well. The Punjab Kings, who did not originally intend to add Shashank to their roster, found themselves in a peculiar situation, compelled to include the unwanted player in their squad.
