Former Indian captain Virat Kohli painted a picture-perfect scene at the renowned Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday by smashing a record-breaking century to overtake his idol, Sachin Tendulkar. During the first semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2023 between India and Kane Williamson’s New Zealand, Kohli hammered his 50th One Day International (ODI) century to beat Sachin’s record count of centuries.
Following Mohammed Shami’s outstanding fast-bowling performance, a record century from Kohli guaranteed India a spot in the ICC World Cup final. When Kohli destroyed the Kiwi batters in Mumbai, former captain Sourav Ganguly, who led India to the World Cup 2003 final, was present at Eden Gardens. When he spoke to reporters in Kolkata, Ganguly lavished admiration on Kohli, the batting legend who became the first player to record 50 hundreds in the 50-over game.

“He’s not done yet, and it will take a lot more beating to go past this. At the Eden Gardens, Ganguly told news agency PTI, “It’s a phenomenal achievement.” Regarding India’s World Cup 2023 campaign, Ganguly declared that, under Rohit Sharma’s direction, the Men in Blue are playing outstanding cricket. “India is currently playing fantastic cricket. Whether it’s the bowlers, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, or Shreyas Iyer. This team is quite talented and has a whole side. However, we must move forward one step at a time, Ganguly said.
Kohli’s game-winning hit against the Black Caps increased his lead at the top of the batting statistics. In Mumbai’s first semi-final, the 35-year-old broke Tendulkar’s quadruple World Cup records. At the 2023 World Cup, Kohli has amassed the most runs of any hitter in a single ODI tournament with 711 runs.

In a World Cup edition, he also holds the record for the most 50-plus scores. In the 50-over encounter, India won the match with a match-winning total of 397 for 4, thanks to Kohli’s historic century. India scored the highest total of any team in a World Cup knockout match versus New Zealand.
