Eleven Major Upsets In World Cup History

With the Netherlands producing a stunning 38 runs win over  South Africa,  this has resulted in 12th major upset in the World Cup history. Let’s take a brief glance at other such upsets in the Cup history

World Cup 1979 Sri Lanka beating India  Sri Lanka was an associate cricket playing nation at that time while India was a test playing nation. The match was played on June 16. India put Sri Lanka into bat and the Islanders scored 238 for the loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 60 overs. Chasing 239 India began well and were 2/119 at one stage then the batting crumbled and India lost the last 8 wickets for just 72 runs to collapse at 191 handing Sri Lanka a 47 runs win.

World Cup 1983 Zimbabwe beating Australia Zimbabwe was an associate cricket playing nation at that time while Australia was a force to reckon with. Match was played on June 9. Australia put Zimbabwe into bat and Zimbabwe piled up 6/239 in their allotted 60 overs. Chasing 240 Australia lost wickets at regular intervals and finished at 7/226 to lose the match by 13 runs.

World Cup 1983 India beating West Indies (group stage)  The same day when Zimbabwe created history India played the defending champions West Indies. West Indies put India in and India piled up 8/262 in their 60 overs courtesy a gutsy 89 from late Yashpal Sharma. Chasing 263 , West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals and were bundled out for 228 to lose the match by 34 runs.

World Cup 1983 India beating West Indies (Grand Finale) Match was played on June 25 and again West Indies put India in. India were bowled out for 183. Chasing 184 to win the World Cup for the third consecutive time West Indies batting crumbled terribly  and were skittled out for 140 to give India a 43 runs win and the World Cup.

World Cup 1996 Kenya beating West Indies The match was played on February 29 at Pune, India. West Indies put Kenya into bat. Kenya, the associate nation, were skittled out for 166. Chasing 167 in 50 overs the Caribbean  batting crumbled only to be bowled out for 93 to lose the match by 73 runs. West Indian batting line-up had star batters in the form of Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and skipper Ritchie Richardson.

World Cup 1999  Bangladesh beating Pakistan The match was played on May 31 at Nottingham. Pakistan put Bangladesh, an associate nation, into bat. Bangladesh ended at 9/223 in their allotted 50 overs. Chasing 224 , Pakistan were never into the hunt only to be skittle out at 161 to lose the match by 62 runs.

World Cup 2007 Ireland beating Pakistan The match was played on March 17 at Kingston, Jamaica. Ireland, the associate nation, put Pakistan in and Pakistan were bundled out for 132 in response Ireland pulled off their required runs losing 7 wickets and win the match by 3 wickets.

World Cup 2007 Bangladesh beating India The same day at Port-of-Spain India clashed with Bangladesh. India, electing to bat put up 191 in 49.3 overs and Bangladesh, a minnows at that time, had no problems in piling up the required runs losing 5 wickets with 9 balls to spare.

World Cup 2007 Bangladesh beating South Africa The match was played on April 7 at Kingston and South Africa put Bangladesh into bat. Bangladesh put up 8/251 in their 50 overs.  Chasing 252 the Proteas lost wickets at regular intervals to be bundled out for 184 to lose the match by 67 runs.

World Cup 2011 Ireland beating England The match was played on March 2 at Bangalore (now Bengaluru). England, electing to bat, put up a mammoth 8/327 in their 50 overs. Ireland stunned everyone by piling up the required runs losing 7 wickets. It was the record chase in a world cup match till Pakistan chased 345 vs Sri Lanka the other day.

World Cup 2015 Bangladesh beating England The match was played on March 9 at the Adelaide Oval. England put Bangladesh in and Bangladesh piled up 7/275 in their allotted 50 overs. Chasing 276 on a slow note England lost wickets at regular intervals trying to accelerate the scoring and were bowled out for 260 to lose the match by 15 runs and bow out of the tournament.

World Cup 2023 Afghanistan beating England The match was played on October 15 at New Delhi. England put Afghanistan in and Afghans put up 284. Chasing 285, England lost wickets at regular intervals only to be bowled out for 215 to lose the match by 69 runs.
