Delhi High Court Denies Immediate Relief To Bajrang Punia In Doping Case

The Delhi High Court has denied wrestler Bajrang Punia immediate relief in his anti-doping case. The court issued a notice to the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and requested a response. It scheduled the next hearing for October.

Punia challenged his suspension by NADA, seeking an interim stay. He argued that the suspension violates his fundamental right to practice his profession and earn a livelihood under the Indian Constitution.

Punia’s Suspension and Petition

NADA suspended Punia after he refused to provide a urine sample during selection trials on March 10. NADA issued the second suspension on June 21, barring him from training or competing. The Disciplinary Anti-Doping Panel (ADDP) had previously lifted the first suspension due to NADA’s failure to provide proper notice.

Punia stated in his petition that the ongoing suspension could force him into retirement.

Risk to World Championship Participation

Punia wants to compete in the Senior World Wrestling Championship in Albania from October 28 to 31. However, the suspension jeopardizes his participation.

His lawyer, Vidushpat Singhania, argued that Punia did not refuse to provide a urine sample but raised concerns over the expired testing kit. The petition urges NADA to lift the ban so Punia can compete in the championship.
