Court To Decide On Rashid Engineer’s Bail Plea In Terror Funding Case On October 5

The Patiala House Court will deliver its verdict on October 5 regarding the regular bail petition filed by Baramulla MP Rashid Engineer, currently in Tihar Jail. Rashid, arrested in a terror funding case, recently received interim bail to campaign in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.

The court granted Rashid interim bail until October 2. Afterward, he must return to Tihar Jail. Rashid had initially requested three months of interim bail to support his brother, Khurshid Ahmed, who is contesting the 2024 assembly elections from Langate in North Kashmir.

Custodial Parole for Election Oath

Earlier, on July 5, the court granted Rashid custodial parole to take his oath as an MP after defeating former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Rashid, also known as Sheikh Abdul Rashid, has been jailed since 2019 after his arrest under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Rashid’s name surfaced during the interrogation of businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2017. The NIA claims organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hizbul Mujahideen, and others, backed by Pakistan’s ISI, carried out attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. The court framed charges against Rashid and other separatist leaders in March 2022 for their involvement in the case.
