Can RCB Start Strong Again? Patidar Opts To Field As IPL 2026 Begins vs SRH

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru kicked off their IPL 2026 season by deciding to field against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Captain Rajat Patidar included debutants Abhinandan Singh and Jacob Duffy in the playing XI, signalling a refreshed approach for the new season.

The match marked the resumption of competitive cricket at the venue after nearly a year. The ground had previously witnessed a tragic stampede during RCB’s title celebrations in June, resulting in the loss of 11 lives.

To honour the victims, players wore black armbands and trained in jerseys featuring the number ‘11’.

Speaking after the toss, Patidar expressed strong belief in his squad’s capabilities, stating that the team aims to secure the title once again rather than simply defend it. He also highlighted the balance within the side and confirmed that all players are in good physical condition.

Sunrisers Hyderabad are being captained by Ishan Kishan, who is leading an IPL side for the first time. He becomes one of the youngest captains in the franchise’s history, following Kane Williamson. Regular skipper Pat Cummins is unavailable due to a back injury.

Kishan confirmed the inclusion of debutant Salil Arora and stated that the team would focus on executing its plans with confidence.

RCB’s XI includes experienced players such as Virat Kohli, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Krunal Pandya. On the other hand, SRH feature key names including Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, and Harshal Patel.

With fresh faces, new leadership roles, and an emotional backdrop, the opening fixture of IPL 2026 sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting and closely contested season.
