Mitchell Starc’s sensational six-wicket haul helped Australia bowl out India for 180 on Day One of the Adelaide Test. Despite brief resistance from Nitish Kumar Reddy (42), KL Rahul (37), and Shubman Gill (31), Starc’s (6/48) brilliance dominated the innings.
India opted to bat first but suffered an early setback as Yashasvi Jaiswal fell to Starc on the first ball. Gill and Rahul stabilized the innings, taking India to 50 in the 15th over. Rahul played confidently, striking six boundaries before Starc dismissed him. Starc then removed Virat Kohli (7), caught in the slips, as India faltered to 77/3.
Middle-Order Fightback Falls Short
The middle order struggled against the Australian pace attack. Gill was trapped lbw by Scott Boland for 31. Skipper Rohit Sharma managed only three runs off 23 balls before falling to Boland. Wickets tumbled rapidly as Starc and Cummins dismantled India.
Nitish Kumar Reddy displayed aggression, smashing Scott Boland for 21 runs in an over, including two sixes and a four. Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in with 22, adding some crucial runs. However, Starc returned to clean up the tail, claiming his sixth wicket by dismissing Nitish.
Starc Creates History in Pink-Ball Tests
Starc’s six-fer marked his fourth five-wicket haul in day-night Tests, the most by any bowler. Pat Cummins and Scott Boland picked two wickets each to complement Starc’s efforts. India’s innings lasted just 44.1 overs.
Australia will begin their reply after Tea with momentum firmly on their side.
