BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia met the Indian cricket squad on Saturday at Wankhede Stadium. His visit was aimed at reviewing the team’s preparation for their opening ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 match against the USA.
Saikia also examined arrangements at the stadium as organisers finalised plans for the opening ceremony. During the visit, he engaged with captain Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and members of the ground management team.
The BCCI secretary shared photographs of the meeting on X, highlighting discussions with the players and inspections of the venue’s facilities.
He noted, “Inspected and discussed the final-minute preparations of Team India, and also reviewed the hosting arrangements for the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup, 2026, starting today at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.”
In addition to meeting the senior team, Saikia recently announced a cash prize of Rs 7.5 crore for India’s victorious Under-19 squad. The young cricketers had claimed their sixth ICC U19 World Cup title by defeating England in the final, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament.
The reward also includes the coaching staff, support personnel, and members of the Junior Cricket Committee, acknowledging their contributions to the team’s success.
The senior Indian team now prepares to defend their T20 World Cup crown on home soil. A victory would make India the first team to retain the title and the first team to win the trophy three times, having lifted it previously in 2007 and 2024.
Placed in Group A, India will face Pakistan, the Netherlands, Namibia, and the USA. The two top teams from the group will progress to the Super 8 stage, keeping the defending champions in strong contention for another historic campaign.
