Earlier, Australia applied intense pressure in the first 20 overs and removed their top four players within the first 12, but David Miller nearly single-handedly guided South Africa to a score of 212 with 101 off 116 balls. Australia decided to bat first and came out with their mouths clenched following Temba Bavuma. With his lines and lengths, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were unrelenting, but the Australian fielders were flying about, stopping nearly everything. As a result, South Africa lost three wickets, including their batting talisman Quinton de Kock, and managed just 22 runs in the first 11 overs. Rassie van der Dussen was sent to Hazlewood on the 12th, which made things much worse.
