World’s Top 5 Toughest Exams: Several people spend a lot of time of their lives preparing for competitive exams and they put in years of effort to qualify for the same. In competitive exams, a vast syllabus and very low pass percentages make these exams appear even tougher.
Recently, in a tweet, IAS official Awanish Sharan mentioned a list of the top 5 toughest tests in the world. Also, it appears that two of India’s most sought-after competitive exams are on the list mentioned by IAS official Awaniash.
The Joint Entrance Exam of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT JEE Exam) and the Union Public Service Commission- Civil Services Exam (UPSE-CSE) are mentioned in the list of the toughest exams at national and international levels.

The Gaokao known as the National Higher Education Entrance Examination or National College Entrance Examination is a yearly exam for undergraduate programme aspirants in China. According to a report, less than 0.25 per cent of the aspirants achieve the required score for admission to China’s most prestigious institutions.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) in India conducts the IIT JEE engineering entrance test to evaluate candidates for undergraduate engineering programmes in prestigious IITs across India. On average, IIT exam preparation takes two years and assesses the candidate’s aptitude in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Moreover, it evaluates their reasoning, analytical, and comprehensive abilities. IIT acceptance rates hover around 1%. It becomes one of the most difficult in the world when you take into account the extensive syllabus and the unpredictable nature of the questions.
The Government of India conducts the UPSC exam to fill positions in organizations such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other Central Services. Two general-topic objective papers make up the prelims, which are the first part of the test. The aspirant passing range to clear the exam is 0.1 per cent to 0.4 per cent. After passing the preliminary and main exams, candidates get to the interview stage. The interview panel will evaluate their personality, awareness, and reasoning.
Mensa is one of the largest and most established high-IQ organizations that assess candidates’ skills in areas like logic, reasoning, and problem-solving. This non-profit organization administers the highly challenging test to create a society of people who score above the 98th percentile on supervised IQ tests. Any applicant who clears the Mensa test with a score that falls within the top 2 per cent of the entire population gets admission as a member.
The GRE is a standardized exam that assesses a student’s general academic preparedness for graduate school. As a result, this exam is necessary for students who seek entry into multiple graduate programmes in the US, Canada, and a few other nations. The GRE is difficult because of the reading and vocabulary requirements. To qualify for the sections, candidates must have strong deductive abilities.
