Why Do You Feel Less Hungry In Summer? Experts Explain The Science

Many people notice a decline in appetite during the summer months.

Experts say this response is a natural physiological adjustment as the body works harder to regulate its temperature during hot weather.

Heat influences digestion, hydration levels and hunger signals, often making heavy meals less appealing.

Celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija explained that rising temperatures increase fluid and electrolyte loss through sweating. This process affects several bodily functions, including appetite regulation. She also noted that protein requirements do not decrease during summer.

Inconsistent protein consumption can contribute to fatigue, slower recovery and stronger cravings later in the day.

Clinical nutrition expert Dr Misba Begum stated that the body prioritises cooling mechanisms when temperatures rise.

As a result, digestion slows, and hunger signals weaken.

Many individuals prefer cold beverages, fruits and light snacks instead of regular meals.

Increased sweating can also lead to dehydration and electrolyte loss, causing tiredness and a sensation of fullness.

High temperatures may further influence hormones linked to hunger and digestion.

Experts caution against replacing meals with sugary drinks, packaged juices or desserts.

Skipping meals for extended periods may lead to weakness, poor concentration and nutritional deficiencies. It may also trigger overeating later and contribute to digestive discomfort.

To maintain health during summer, specialists recommend consuming light but balanced meals.

Fresh fruits, salads, curd, buttermilk and easily digestible home-cooked foods remain ideal choices.

Water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, coconut water and lemon water help maintain hydration and electrolyte balance.

Regular small meals, adequate water intake and sufficient protein can help sustain energy levels and overall well-being throughout the season.
