Summer Pet Care: Keeping Your Furry Friends Healthy and Happy

As the summer sun blazes, it’s crucial to pay extra attention to your beloved animal companions to ensure their well-being isn’t compromised by the scorching heat. While pets may not always display obvious signs of distress, the soaring temperatures can pose serious health risks, including dehydration, heatstroke, and discomfort. Here are some essential tips to take care of your pet during the hot summer months:

Ticks and Fleas:

Although ticks and fleas are a year-round concern, their prevalence tends to increase during the summer. After outdoor activities, thoroughly check your pets for these pests, paying particular attention to their paw digits, base of tail, and armpits where ticks often hide. While natural repellent sprays can be helpful, consider using medicated solutions if infestation occurs to prevent tick fever.

Shedding:

Seasonal changes often trigger shedding in pets as they shed their undercoat to regulate body temperature. Regular grooming is key to managing excess fur in your home and promoting healthy skin and coat. Consider supplementing their diet with omega-3 to support skin health.

Heatstroke:

With temperatures rising, pets are susceptible to dehydration and heatstroke. Schedule walks during cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours. Watch for signs of excessive panting and provide ample water and shade to keep them cool.

Appetite Changes:

The summer heat can impact your pet’s appetite, leading to reduced food intake. Adjust their diet accordingly by offering lighter meals and incorporating protein sources with cooling properties like duck and fish. Adding hydrating options such as bone broth or yogurt can also entice picky eaters and provide additional nutrition.
