When a mosquito bites a person, an uncommon allergic reaction known as Skeeter syndrome, often called “mosquito bite allergy,” takes place. While most people only feel mild itching, redness, and swelling at the bite site, those who have Skeeter syndrome undergo an exacerbated immunological response. It is thought that an allergic reaction to proteins in mosquito saliva is the cause of this medical condition.
According to Dr. Nikhil Kulkarni, Consultant-Internal Medicine at SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim, “A mosquito uses its proboscis, a needle-like mouthpart, to pierce the victim’s skin during a blood-sucking bite. When this happens, the mosquito injects saliva-carrying proteins into the victim’s skin. Most people only experience a modest immunological reaction as a result; however, in those who are particularly vulnerable, the immune system detects these proteins as foreign substances and sets off an allergic reaction. Skeeter syndrome is a severe medical problem, even though it is uncommon since it can result in terrible symptoms that, if left untreated, can be fatal. To lessen its severity, it’s crucial to be aware of the symptoms and minimize mosquito bite risk.

Dr. Nikhil Kulkarni offered advice on how to avoid getting Skeeter syndrome and when to see a doctor, saying, “It is impossible to avoid getting Skeeter syndrome since a person cannot regulate how the immune system responds to particular proteins. Reduced exposure to mosquito bites is the best approach to preventing a reaction, especially if the person has already experienced an episode of Skeeter syndrome. Additionally, it is recommended to develop a treatment plan with a doctor to stop this problem from impairing living quality.
