Petroleum Jelly On Your Face At Night? Here’s What My 7-Night Test Revealed

Face slugging may look unusual, but this skincare trend has regained attention across beauty platforms.

The method involves applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly after completing a nighttime skincare routine.

The occlusive layer helps reduce moisture loss while you sleep.

Curious about its effects, I tested the technique for seven consecutive nights.

On the first night, I applied too much petroleum jelly. My face became extremely shiny, while my hair stuck to my forehead.

I worried about staining my pillowcase. My skin, however, felt noticeably softer the next morning.

By night two, I reduced the quantity. My skin felt comfortable, hydrated and smoother after waking.

The third morning brought clearer results. Dry patches looked less prominent, while my moisturiser seemed to keep my skin comfortable for longer.

The experiment clarified slugging’s purpose.

Petroleum jelly does not magically moisturise the skin. Instead, its occlusive coating helps retain moisture already applied through skincare products.

On night four, I again applied too much. My face felt heavy, and my hair stuck to my forehead.

The experience reinforced an important rule: more petroleum jelly does not mean better results.

I avoided layering numerous active ingredients beneath the occlusive coating.

A simple routine worked better. I cleansed my face, applied moisturiser, added a thin petroleum jelly layer and went to bed.

After seven nights, my skin remained soft and hydrated. The pillowcase may disagree, but my skin certainly did not complain.
