S Jaishankar Visits Warsaw Memorials Honouring India’s Help To Polish Civilians During WWII

On Saturday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited two memorials in Warsaw to honour India’s humanitarian role in helping Polish civilians during the Second World War, highlighting the historical ties between India and Poland.

At the Kolhapur Memorial, Jaishankar paid tribute to the royal family of Kolhapur for providing refuge in India to around 5,000 Polish women and children displaced by the war.

The memorial carries an inscription expressing gratitude to India, reflecting the lasting appreciation for the country’s support among Polish people.

Jaishankar later visited the Dobry Maharaja Memorial, which commemorates Jamsaheb of Nawanagar, Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja, for sheltering more than 1,000 Polish children during the war.

Polish MP Kinga Gajewska and Ochota Mayor Piotr Krasnodębski accompanied Jaishankar during the visit.

The Minister said the Maharaja’s compassion continues to serve as a bridge between the two countries.

Jamsaheb is fondly remembered in Poland as the ‘Dobry Maharaja’, or ‘Good Maharaja’, for his efforts to care for Polish children displaced during the conflict.

Jaishankar’s Warsaw engagements included a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki on Friday. Their discussions covered the India-Poland Strategic Partnership, the Ukraine conflict, the Middle East, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and the G20.

The Minister met members of the India-Poland Parliamentary Group to exchange views on strengthening contemporary relations between the two countries.
