Gym vs Yoga: Why Choosing Both Could Be Better For Your Fitness Goals

The debate between gym workouts and yoga often treats the two as competing forms of exercise. Research, however, suggests that they serve different purposes and can complement each other.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that adults complete 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity every week, along with muscle-strengthening exercises involving major muscle groups at least two days a week.

Gym-based resistance training provides a direct way to meet the muscle-strengthening component. Squats, presses, rows, deadlifts and other resistance exercises progressively challenge muscles.

A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that any resistance training was associated with a 15% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared with no resistance training.

The researchers reported associations with lower cardiovascular and cancer mortality, although these findings came largely from observational studies and do not prove that resistance training alone caused the reductions. It combines physical postures, breathing and, in many practices, meditation.

Data from the US National Health Interview Survey showed that 16.9% of adults practised yoga in 2022.

Women reported yoga participation at 23.3%, compared with 10.3% among men.

Among yoga practitioners, 80% said they practised to restore overall health, 57.4% incorporated meditation, and 28.8% used it to treat or manage pain.

Public participation shows that yoga attracts people across different age groups.

In the same survey, 21.3% of adults aged 18–44 practised yoga, compared with 14.1% of those aged 45–64 and 8% of adults aged 65 and older.

The figures measure participation rather than satisfaction, but they demonstrate yoga’s substantial presence in recreational fitness.

The biggest difference appears in the type of physical adaptation each method encourages.

Progressive resistance training makes it easier to pursue measurable increases in strength and muscle size.

Yoga can place greater emphasis on flexibility, balance, movement control and relaxation. Neither automatically provides every component of fitness.

For many people, combining the two may offer a broader approach.

Strength training can provide resistance work, while yoga can add mobility, balance and controlled movement.

The WHO itself emphasises that adults should include both aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening work rather than relying on a single form of exercise.

The choice therefore depends less on which activity is universally superior and more on the individual’s goals.

Someone pursuing muscle and strength may prioritise resistance training. Someone seeking flexibility, balance and a mind-body practice may prefer yoga.

A combination can address several fitness qualities within the same weekly routine.
