From Humble Clay To Colossal Glory: Ram Sutar’s Century-Long Legacy Ends

India has lost one of its greatest artistic visionaries. Ram Vanji Sutar, the legendary sculptor whose hands shaped the physical symbols of modern India, passed away at his residence in Noida at the age of 100.

Family members confirmed that he died due to age-related ailments, closing a remarkable century-long journey defined by discipline, dignity, and devotion to art.

Condolences poured in from across the nation as leaders, artists, and institutions paid tribute.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Ram Sutar as an artist who immortalised India’s history and ideals. They said his mastery turned metal and stone into enduring symbols of the nation.

Cultural bodies described his passing as an irreplaceable loss to India’s artistic and civilisational heritage.

Born on February 19, 1925, in Gondur village of Dhule district, Maharashtra, Ram Sutar rose from modest beginnings to become the country’s most influential public sculptor.

He trained at the prestigious Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai and graduated as a gold medallist. He then devoted more than seven decades to monumental art that blended realism with reverence.

Sutar’s most iconic creation, the Statue of Unity, stands as the defining achievement of his career. Towering at 182 metres in Kevadia, Gujarat, it remains the tallest statue in the world.

As chief sculptor and conceptual designer, Sutar translated Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s leadership into a form that conveyed resolve without aggression.

Patel’s forward stride, calm expression, and restrained authority reflect Sutar’s unwavering commitment to realism over exaggeration.

Artistic Precision Behind a Global Landmark

Despite the unprecedented scale, Sutar personally supervised artistic detailing well into his nineties. He worked closely with engineers to preserve proportion, balance, and human expression, ensuring the statue remained a sculpture first and an engineering marvel second.

Inaugurated in 2018, the Statue of Unity has since become a national symbol and a global landmark.

Beyond Kevadia, Sutar’s legacy stretches across India’s civic spaces. His works include the Mahatma Gandhi statue outside Parliament, the equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Parliament House, and statues of BR Ambedkar and VD Savarkar.

His sculptures command presence without theatricality, marked by emotional restraint and quiet power.

India recognised his contributions with the Padma Shri (1999), Padma Bhushan (2016), and the Maharashtra Bhushan, the state’s highest civilian honour.

These accolades honoured not just a sculptor, but a nation-builder in bronze and stone.

As India mourns, Ram Sutar’s monuments continue to speak. They stand in silence, yet they narrate the story of a nation, reminding generations that art can shape memory, identity, and pride long after the artist is gone.
