Supreme Court To Hear Delhi-NCR Pollution, Stubble Burning And Green Firecracker Cases Ahead Of Diwali

The Supreme Court will hear Delhi-NCR pollution, stubble burning and green firecracker sale cases on Thursday ahead of Diwali.

The hearing comes amid growing concerns over deteriorating air quality in the national capital and surrounding areas, with the court expected to consider measures to curb pollution during the festive season.

The proceedings will address issues surrounding the manufacturing and use of firecrackers.

Under an earlier Supreme Court order aimed at tackling air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the manufacturing, storage and use of all types of firecrackers remain prohibited.

The restrictions seek to prevent activities that could further deteriorate air quality across the region.

During its previous hearing, the apex court indicated the possibility of granting limited relaxation to the restrictions. It allowed manufacturers to produce ‘green’ firecrackers for the Delhi-NCR region, while making it clear that permission to manufacture them would not automatically authorise their sale.

The question of permitting the sale of green firecrackers is expected to remain a key issue during Thursday’s proceedings, particularly with Diwali approaching.

Any decision on their sale could influence the measures adopted to regulate firecracker use during the festival.

The Supreme Court had directed the Central Government to consult relevant stakeholders and work towards developing a balanced policy on the manufacturing and use of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR.

In earlier observations, the court emphasised that public awareness and voluntary participation could prove more effective in addressing firecracker-related pollution than restrictive orders that authorities might struggle to enforce on the ground.

The proceedings come as Delhi-NCR continues to grapple with air pollution, prompting renewed attention to measures aimed at improving air quality and limiting emissions during the festive period.
