Supreme Court To Hear CBI Plea Against Suspension Of Kuldeep Sengar’s Life Sentence

The Supreme Court will hear the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) challenge to the suspension of Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s life sentence in the 2017 Unnao rape case, a move that has reignited national outrage and raised serious questions about justice delivery in crimes against women.

A vacation bench led by the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices JK Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih, will take up the matter for hearing on Monday, according to the official cause list of the apex court.

The CBI has approached the Supreme Court against the December 23 order of the Delhi High Court, which suspended Sengar’s life sentence and granted him conditional bail while his appeal remains pending.

The High Court order triggered sharp reactions from the survivor’s family and women’s rights activists, who took to protests and public statements, asserting that the suspension of sentence sent a deeply troubling signal.

They warned that such relief to a convicted offender risks ‘shaking public faith’ and weakening deterrence in cases of sexual violence.
