Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to Odia freedom fighter and social reformer Parvati Giri during his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat.
PM Modi announced that India will commemorate her birth centenary in January 2026 and highlighted her pivotal role in the freedom struggle and lifelong dedication to social welfare.
On the 129th episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi reflected on the nation’s 77th Republic Day celebrations, emphasising the sacrifices and contributions of countless freedom fighters.
He noted that while India’s independence was shaped by individuals from every corner of the country, many of these heroes did not receive their due recognition.
PM Modi stressed the importance of remembering and honouring their extraordinary efforts.
PM Modi particularly spotlighted Parvati Giri, hailing her as an ‘Agnikanya’ of Odisha. He recalled that she joined the Quit India Movement at just 16 years of age and later devoted her life to tribal welfare and social service.
PM Modi highlighted her establishment of orphanages and her relentless work for marginalised communities, portraying her as a guiding beacon for future generations.
“Her inspiring life will continue to guide every generation. I pay my tribute to Parvati Giri,” PM Modi said.
PM Modi called upon citizens to actively pass down the legacy of such unsung heroes to younger generations.
He reminded listeners of the government’s initiative during the 75th Independence anniversary that created a dedicated website honouring ‘Unsung Heroes’, which remains accessible today for anyone seeking to learn about India’s freedom fighters.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep gratitude toward PM Modi’s tribute.
Taking to X, he posted, “Today, through the #MannKiBaat program, by paying tribute to Parbati Giri, one of Odisha’s great freedom fighters who dedicated herself to the service of the poor and deprived, on the eve of her birth centenary, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Honourable Prime Minister. Remembering the contributions of this fire-born daughter of Odisha is a matter of pride for the entire state.”
PM Modi’s tribute underscored the continued relevance of remembering India’s independence architects and the social reformers who strengthened the nation beyond politics.
By highlighting Parvati Giri’s courage, leadership, and compassion, PM Modi reiterated the need to inspire young Indians to carry forward the values of service, patriotism, and societal responsibility.
Through his Mann Ki Baat address, PM Modi reinforced the narrative that India’s freedom struggle was not only fought on battlefields but also through selfless service, social activism, and moral courage.
His call to honour heroes like Parvati Giri ensures their stories remain alive in public memory, motivating generations to uphold India’s rich heritage of courage, sacrifice, and social commitment.
