The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, seeking a response on the bail plea of Atul Sengar. He is serving a 10-year sentence in the custodial death case of the Unnao rape victim’s father. Atul Sengar, brother of expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, is accused of torturing the victim’s father, who later died in custody.
Atul Sengar, suffering from mouth cancer, has approached the Supreme Court after failing to get relief from the Delhi High Court. The High Court had earlier granted him interim bail for medical treatment but later refused to extend it. The court directed Sengar to remain in Delhi, refrain from contacting witnesses, and share his location with the CBI while on bail.
Following the court’s directive, he surrendered after the interim bail period ended. His legal team argues that he needs intensive medical care, which is not possible in jail. The Supreme Court will now hear the Atul Sengar bail plea after the UP government submits its response.
On March 13, 2020, the Tis Hazari Court convicted Kuldeep Sengar, Atul Sengar, and five others. They received 10-year jail terms for the custodial death of the Unnao rape victim’s father. The case gained national attention, highlighting police brutality and political influence.
With the Supreme Court’s notice, the Atul Sengar bail plea now awaits further hearing. The court’s decision will determine whether he gets medical relief or continues to serve his sentence.
