Supreme Court Seeks CBSE Response On Withheld Result Of Saudi-Based Student

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and its Regional Officer in Dubai on a petition filed by a Class 12 student from Saudi Arabia seeking the declaration of his withheld improvement examination result.

A bench comprising Justices Manmohan and Vijay Bishnoi directed the respondents to file their response and scheduled the matter for hearing on June 12.

During the hearing, CBSE told the court that the concerned school had to conduct the student’s assessment.

Since petitioner Pransu Jigarkumar Patel appeared as a private candidate, no assessment records were available.

The bench observed that Patel’s previous academic records could be taken into consideration and asked CBSE to obtain instructions on the issue before the next hearing.

While CBSE sought additional time, stating that it was already examining the matter, the court fixed June 12 for further proceedings.

Patel, who appeared for the CBSE Class 12 Improvement Examination 2026 from Al Jubail in Saudi Arabia, had taken exams in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and Computer Science.

Several examinations, including Mathematics, English and Computer Science, remain cancelled due to security concerns arising from war-related tensions in the Gulf region.

Special Assessment Scheme Under Scrutiny

The petition stated that CBSE had introduced a special assessment scheme on March 27 for students in affected West Asian countries.

The scheme allowed evaluation based on Quarterly, Half-Yearly and Pre-Board examination performance and also provided for special examinations where required.

Despite this, CBSE marked Patel’s Class 12 result as ‘RL (Result Later)’ when it declared the results on May 13.

The plea alleged that repeated representations seeking either a declaration of the result under the assessment scheme or permission to appear in a special examination received no response.

Filed through advocate Vineet Jindal under Article 32 of the Constitution, the petition contends that the continued withholding of the result has affected Patel’s chances of securing admission to a B.Tech programme and other higher education institutions. It seeks directions to CBSE to declare the result under the special assessment scheme or, alternatively, conduct a special examination for the cancelled subjects.
