PIB Debunks Fake Viral Claim Attributed To PM Modi On Gold Deposits

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has debunked a viral social media post that falsely attributed a fabricated statement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding gold ownership and bank deposits.

The misleading image, digitally altered and widely circulated online, presented a purported quote from PM Modi and carried the branding of a newspaper report.

The viral post falsely claimed that the Prime Minister had appealed to women to sell their gold and deposit the proceeds in banks.

PIB Fact Check categorically rejected the claim and labelled the image as fake.

The fact-checking agency stated that the visual had been manipulated to misrepresent the Prime Minister’s remarks and mislead the public.

The image carried a prominent ‘FAKE’ stamp, confirming that someone fabricated the claim.

According to PIB Fact Check, Prime Minister Modi never made the statement attributed to him in the viral image.

Officials clarified that the claim distorted his actual comments and created a false narrative.

The fact-check comes amid increased efforts by authorities to curb misinformation circulating across digital platforms.

Officials urged citizens to verify information through credible and official sources before sharing it online.

The clarification also highlighted the difference between the fabricated claim and the Prime Minister’s genuine remarks made in May 2026.

At that time, PM Modi advised citizens to postpone non-essential gold purchases for approximately one year. He suggested, in the context of economic pressures arising from the Iran conflict and the need to conserve the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

PIB emphasised that the Prime Minister never urged women to sell their gold or deposit money in banks.

The agency further reiterated that the viral image deliberately altered facts and misrepresented his position.

The fact-check serves as a reminder for social media users to remain cautious. It also urges them to avoid amplifying unverified content. Such content may distort public discourse and spread misinformation.
