PM Modi Congratulates Armenia’s PM Nikol Pashinyan On Election Victory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan following the victory of the Civil Contract Party in Armenia’s parliamentary elections and expressed his willingness to further strengthen bilateral relations.

In a post on X, PM Modi said the renewed mandate reflected the trust and confidence of the Armenian people in Pashinyan’s leadership and vision. He also reaffirmed his commitment to expanding the longstanding friendship and cooperation between India and Armenia.

According to preliminary data released by Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission, the ruling Civil Contract Party secured 49.825 per cent of the vote.

The Strong Armenia bloc received 23.281 per cent of the vote. The Armenia bloc secured 9.934 per cent. The Prosperous Armenia Party obtained 3.996 per cent.

The development comes amid expanding cooperation between India and Armenia across defence, strategic and diplomatic sectors.

Last month, Lieutenant General Edvard Asryan, Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, visited India. He held high-level discussions with the Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi.

The talks focused on regional security developments, defence collaboration, military engagement and areas of shared interest.

During the visit, Lieutenant General Asryan met Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. He also held meetings with Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.

Discussions covered defence cooperation, operational coordination, interoperability and potential joint military hardware projects.

Earlier this year, Armenia helped Indian nationals stranded in Iran during escalating tensions in West Asia. The country played a key role in the evacuation effort.

On April 11, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced that 312 Indian fishermen had safely returned to India through Armenia.

Earlier, on April 5, another 345 fishermen reached Chennai through the same evacuation route.

Jaishankar thanked the Armenian government for facilitating the safe transit and evacuation of Indian citizens from the conflict-affected region. He also expressed gratitude to Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan for the support.
