Supreme Court Collegium Recommends New Judges For Karnataka & Himachal Pradesh High Courts

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of three district judges to the Karnataka High Court. The Collegium made this decision during its meeting on September 15.

The five-member Collegium included Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice JK Maheshwari, and Justice BV Nagarathna.

The Collegium recommended Geeta Kadaba Bhartaraj Setty, Muralidhar Pai Borkatte, and Thyagaraj Narayan Inavali for elevation as judges of the Karnataka High Court. It also proposed making Additional Judge Justice Kurubahalli Venkataramareddy Aravind a permanent judge.

Currently, the Karnataka High Court has 62 sanctioned judgeships, but only 46 judges are serving.

The Collegium also recommended the appointment of two advocates, Jia Lal Bhardwaj and Romesh Verma, as judges of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

At present, the Himachal Pradesh High Court has 17 sanctioned posts, but only 11 judges are working.

Recent Appointments in Allahabad High Court

Earlier, based on the Collegium’s recommendation, the central government approved the appointment of two senior lawyers, Abhitabh Kumar Rai and Rajeev Lochan Shukla, as judges of the Allahabad High Court.

The Collegium also recently recommended 12 lawyers and 14 judicial officers for appointment to the Allahabad High Court. The court currently faces a massive backlog of 11,55,225 pending cases.

With Uttar Pradesh’s population of 240 million, the High Court has only one judge for every 3 million people. On average, each judge is burdened with 14,623 pending cases.
