The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea seeking the removal of Madhya Pradesh Tribal Welfare Minister Vijay Shah over his controversial remarks allegedly directed towards Colonel Sofiya Quershi, an Indian Army Officer, who was part of the government’s press team on Operation Sindoor.
“Avoid filing this kind of petition before the Supreme Court,” a two-member Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi remarked.
However, the apex court also reprimanded the minister for failing to issue a proper public apology, saying ‘this man is testing our patience’ and his online apology raises doubts over his intentions.
According to the petition filed by Congress leader Jaya Thakur, Vijay Shah, a BJP MLA and a Minister in Mohan Yadav’s Cabinet, violated the oath he had taken under Article 164 (3) of the Indian Constitution.
After learning that Vijay Shah had a history of controversial remarks, the Justice Kant-led Bench directed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incidents highlighted in the plea.
The case stems from a viral video, which shows that Vijay Shah had allegedly said that PM Modi had sent ‘Sister of the same community’ to avenge the April 22 terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, sparking widespread outrage and Controversy.
Colonel Sofiya Quershi became a symbol of national pride following a press conference by the Indian Government on Operation Sindoor, in which she represented the Indian Army and briefed on the details of the Operation undertaken by the Army.
She was part of a three-member team, including Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, representing the Ministry of External Affairs, and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh from the Indian Air Force.
