SC Acts On Report Highlighting Lack Of CCTV Cameras In Police Stations

The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report highlighting the absence of adequate CCTV cameras in police stations across several states.

Acting on a report published by the media, the apex court noted serious concerns over the lack of surveillance in custodial facilities and directed that the issue be examined in the public interest.

The Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta registered a public interest litigation (PIL) on its own motion to address the matter. The move reflects the Court’s increasing focus on ensuring accountability and transparency in law enforcement operations.

Rising Custodial Deaths Trigger Concern

During the hearing, the Bench referred to figures indicating that approximately 11 deaths had occurred in police custody in the past seven to eight months.

The Court observed that such incidents raised pressing questions about the protection of fundamental rights and the effectiveness of current oversight mechanisms.

By invoking its suo motu powers, the Supreme Court signalled its intent to push for stronger compliance with earlier directives mandating CCTV installation in all police stations and lock-ups.

Legal experts believe the Court’s intervention could accelerate the implementation of surveillance measures and enhance safeguards for detainees. The absence of functional cameras, they say, undermines both transparency and public confidence in policing.

The Bench directed the registry to list the PIL for further hearing, inviting responses from state governments and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Observers expect that the case may lead to binding directions on installing and maintaining CCTV systems, a long-standing demand of rights groups.

By acting on its own initiative, the Supreme Court has once again underscored the judiciary’s role as a guardian of constitutional rights, particularly in matters affecting vulnerable individuals in state custody.
