Monalisa Bhosle Case: Kerala Marriage Row Triggers POCSO Probe After Minor Claim

A marriage once showcased as a symbol of inclusivity in Kerala now faces grave legal examination.

Authorities registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) against Farman Khan after findings revealed that the bride, Monalisa Bhosle, was allegedly a minor.

The inquiry by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes established her birth date as December 30, 2009. This indicated she was only 16 at the time of the ceremony.

Officials also flagged the alleged creation of a forged birth certificate to enable the marriage.

Senior police officials from Kerala and Madhya Pradesh have been summoned for further clarification

The wedding took place on March 11 at a temple in Poovar near Thiruvananthapuram. The couple had earlier approached police seeking protection, citing familial opposition.

Authorities permitted the union because the bride had attained adulthood.

The event drew political attention due to the presence of leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), including MV Govindan and V Sivankutty. They had publicly endorsed the marriage as a reflection of progressive values and social harmony.

The disclosure of the bride’s age has sharply shifted the narrative. It has raised serious concerns about administrative oversight, verification lapses, and political endorsement.

The couple, originating from Indore and Maharashtra respectively, had chosen Kerala, anticipating resistance elsewhere due to their interfaith relationship.

The case now transforms a celebrated union into a contentious legal and political controversy.
