Justice Surya Kant Addresses UGC Regulations and Wider Social Equality Concerns Distinctly

Social media posts have circulated claims about Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant and his observations on caste, reservation and University Grants Commission regulations.

The posts attribute remarks to the bench during proceedings concerning the UGC Equity Regulations.

They claim the court favoured a casteless society and questioned provisions that allegedly considered only one section.

One widely circulated image attributes a statement to Justice Surya Kant saying that a society cannot blame Brahmins for remaining oppressed after producing IAS officers, IPS officers, a Chief Justice, a President or a Prime Minister.

Other viral images attribute further questions to the bench. These include whether Brahmins created caste divisions among Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains.

The posts claim the court questioned why people continued using caste identities if they opposed caste divisions.

Another graphic praises the Chief Justice for supposedly settling the UGC and reservation debate through his courtroom observations. It quotes the court as saying, “We want a casteless society; do you want to take the country into the past?”

However, available reporting confirms that the Supreme Court did comment on the need for a casteless society while hearing challenges to the 2026 UGC Equity Regulations.

The bench later stayed the regulations and continued the 2012 framework pending further proceedings.

Crucially, Justice Surya Kant has denied the separate viral anti-reservation statement attributed to him, calling it a fabrication that did not reflect his words, views or character.
