Justice Sujoy Paul Recommended As Chief Justice Of Calcutta High Court By Supreme Court Collegium

Collegium sources confirmed that the Supreme Court recommended Justice Sujoy Paul for appointment as Chief Justice on 9th January 2026. The announcement appeared on the apex court’s website, outlining his judicial career and transfers.

“The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on 09th January, 2026, has recommended appointment of Shri Justice Sujoy Paul, Judge, High Court at Calcutta (PHC: Madhya Pradesh) as Chief Justice, High Court at Calcutta,” said the apex court.

Paul joined the Calcutta High Court as a judge on 18th July 2025. He has served as Acting Chief Justice there since October 2025.

Earlier, he served in the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur, elevated on 27th May 2011 and confirmed permanently on 14th April 2014. Later, he requested a transfer to the Telangana High Court in March 2024, assuming office on 26th March 2024.

Born on 21st June 1964, Sujoy Paul completed schooling at Pandit LS Jha Model Higher Secondary School. He pursued graduation, post-graduation, and an LLB from Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur.

Enrolling with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1990, he practised in civil, constitutional, industrial, and service law across various courts.

January 2025 saw Paul appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. Subsequently, the Collegium recommended his transfer to the Calcutta High Court on 26th May 2025, and he assumed the judgeship on 18th July 2025.

After Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam retired on 15th September 2025, Justice Soumen Sen served as Acting Chief Justice until his transfer to the Kerala High Court.

Appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul as Chief Justice is expected to strengthen leadership at the Calcutta High Court. His experience across multiple high court positions positions him to manage legal and administrative responsibilities effectively.
