Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo Takes Oath As Chief Justice Of Patna High Court

Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on Wednesday. He is the 47th person to hold the office.

Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan administered the oath during a formal ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Patna.

The event witnessed the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, members of the state cabinet, judges of the Patna High Court and several senior officials and dignitaries.

The Union Law Ministry notified Justice Sahoo’s appointment on January 1, following approval from the President of India.

Earlier, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name for the post during its meeting held on December 18, 2025.

Justice Sahoo succeeds Justice Sudhir Singh. He had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice after the retirement of Justice Pavankumar Bhimappa Bajanthri in October last year.

Before his elevation, Justice Sahoo served as a judge of the Odisha High Court. He built a strong reputation at the Bar, particularly in criminal law, and earned wide recognition for his legal clarity and judicial temperament.

Born in 1964, Justice Sahoo completed his schooling at Nayabazar High School in Cuttack.

He later pursued a Bachelor of Science degree from Stewart Science College. He also obtained a Master’s degree in both English and Odia from Utkal University, reflecting a strong academic foundation.

Justice Sahoo hails from a family deeply rooted in the legal profession. He trained under the guidance of his father, the late Sarat Chandra Sahoo, a respected authority on criminal law, which helped shape his understanding of legal principles from an early stage.

He enrolled as an advocate with the Odisha State Bar Council on November 26, 1989. During his early years of practice, he worked closely with senior advocate Dr Manoranjan Panda.

Recognising his legal acumen, the authorities appointed him as a judge of the Odisha High Court on July 2, 2014. His elevation to the Patna High Court’s top judicial post continues his long and distinguished service in the judiciary.
