Delhi Police Invoke SC/ST Act In Malviya Nagar Racial Abuse Case

Delhi Police have invoked relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in connection with the alleged racial abuse and humiliation of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the police, the provisions were applied based on material available on record.

One of the accused, identified as Ruby Jain, has been arrested. The second accused has been named as Harsh Singh.

Officials stated that an officer of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) rank is now leading the investigation.

Senior officers are closely supervising the probe, and further inquiry remains in progress.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred on February 20 following a dispute over repair work at the women’s rented accommodation.

The three women had engaged an electrician to install an air conditioner in their fourth-floor flat.

During the drilling work, dust and debris reportedly fell onto the lower floor, leading to objections from neighbours. The dispute quickly escalated, with the accused allegedly hurling abuses and making derogatory racial remarks.

A video of the incident later surfaced online, triggering public outrage.

Delhi Police registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, invoking provisions related to outraging a woman’s modesty and promoting enmity on grounds of religion and race. Authorities assured a fair investigation.

Pema Khandu, Conrad K Sangma, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and Indra Hang Subba condemned the incident, demanding strict action.

The case has renewed concerns over racial discrimination against people from the Northeast.
