The Delhi Police rearrested AAP MLA Naresh Balyan on Wednesday under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), just minutes after he secured bail in an extortion case. After the Rouse Avenue Court granted his bail application, the Crime Branch apprehended him within the court premises and escorted him to their office.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the court extended Balyan’s police custody by one day and directed the Delhi Police to respond to his bail plea. Balyan’s lawyer questioned the necessity of his arrest, asserting that he was ready to cooperate with the investigation.
Initially, Balyan was placed in two days of police custody on Sunday following allegations of extortion. The Delhi Police argued for a five-day custody period to interrogate him thoroughly. The arrest stemmed from audio clips allegedly featuring Balyan in a conversation with gangster Kapil Sangwan, also known as Nandu. The recordings reportedly reveal plans to extort money from builders and others in Delhi.
The BJP labeled Balyan an “extortionist” and accused AAP of shielding him. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia claimed Balyan’s actions were carried out with the knowledge and approval of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Kailash Gahlot dismissed conspiracy claims surrounding the arrest but criticized AAP’s top leadership for failing to act. “It’s disturbing that senior AAP leaders, including Kejriwal, ignored such activities for over a year,” Gahlot said.
The political row has escalated, with BJP demanding accountability from AAP regarding its handling of the matter.
